Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is also another serious problem besides bulling in American today. Many households have been abused by  their father, mother or even siblings. Most of the time people tend to have excuses for why they are been abused. Some people say that " they love me that's why they will hit me." Some women also feel that if their husband or boyfriends leave them, they cannot survive without them so they allow their mates to hit them or do anything that they want to do with them. Some people can be assaulted as well. They make excuse which from their point of view is a valid reason. Nobody should ever be a victim of domestic violence but unfortunately it does happen. Some people can even lose their lives in this process. This is disregarded but it should not be because people's lives depend on it. These violence can be physical abuse such as kicking, slapping, throwing objects at your partner, shoving, biting and many others. Also it can include emotional abuse which is calling them ugly, not pretty and using abusive speech. It can also be controlling. The other partner wants to know the every moves of the other one. For example, where the person went, who they hanged out with, what they talked about, who the individual is texting or talking to and many other. It also involves sexual abuse, intimidating the other partner, stalking them and many other forms. This issue should be taking very seriously so that many people's lives can be saved. The government is already making some awareness of it, so is the public, organizations and schools. With this I think that domestic violence is a social problem and everyone should be involved in making life easier for the victims.

Social Networking

In this modern times, there is superfluous ways of connecting with friends and families. These sites allow their users to share informations with a selected group of friends and families. These sites includes Facebook, Twitter, skype, oovoo, hotmail messenger, Gmail messenger, hi 5, Aim  etc. There are always positive and negative sides to everything. One negative aspect of social networking is that, there is no privacy. Once a person signs up and agrees with their terms and policies, they have the right to advertise  the person's information without their knowledge. Also anything that goes on the Internet is on it permanently and there is nothing that can be done about it. Also the government can get access to all the informations that the users willingly provide. They can be tracked down if anything goes wrong. Also it can waste our time in a matter of seconds. Once a person signs  into their social sites, they forget about reality and the next thing they  know, the time has gone by but there is little work done.Sometimes, people get carried away when they are on these sites so they post pictures of themselves.Depending on the things they post on their sites, it will be hard for them to be employed because employees can check their social sites without their knowledge. Universities and colleges also do the same thing, so it can affect your admission to that particular school a person wants to go to. One positive aspect is that people can use it for good causes. They can make non violent protest on it. they can also make a plea for people who have some type of sickness that needs people to help them. Also people can be discovered through social networks. Many people post their videos on YouTube for them to get noticed by the celebrities. To make things clearer, social networking is just like driving. The fact that a person have his or her license does not mean that they are good drivers. People drive carelessly. At the end of the day, it is up to the person whether he or she wants to drive safe. In that case, it is up to a person on how they are going to use their social networking.

Stereotypes

I'm sure that all of us are aware or familiar with stereotypes. Some say that all Asians are smart which I guess is a good thing for them. The problem is that Asian is a Continent and not a country. Not all "Asians" are smart like they say, so this puts a lot of pressure on people from all the Asian countries.  Many people  think that " Africa" is poor, they live on trees, they do not have Electricity, Computers, Television and they do not speak English. They make fun of the accent that the people have. I guess all people have their opinions but it is crazy to just assume that all people from the Continent of Africa are people just because some of the countries are. For example, I am a Ghanaian which is in the Western part of Africa. I lived there most of my life and before i came to the United States i knew my English. The reason is because English was being taught in schools so we grew up with it. Also we do not live on trees but rather we live in houses and we build it ourselves. We have Internets in Ghana because many people are on Facebook, Twitter and many other social networking sites. We have Televisions in our rooms and we are so familiar with many TV shows all over the world. I remember back when i was little, I used to watch telenolas and TV shows such as " Everybody hates Chris", "Vibe", "Juana la virgen", "Rosalinda", Pangako sa yo" and many other telenovelas.  I was also familiar with many different other foods such as pizza, burgers and many other. I also played Michael Jackson songs and Oprah show. We have cars and we do not walk like people think we do. They are from different countries and i watched it even before I came to this country. It is not a good thing for people to stereotype because most of the things people imagine about a certain group is not always true.In conclusion when people are taught different ideas or generalize about a certain group of people, they should be mindful and not think they are superior than others. Undoubtedly, they should not make fallacy and hasty decisions.

Bullying

bullying is the most harming issue that is going on in this moderning day. Some people experience severe bullying than other people but all bullying is bullying and once the damage is done, there is no taking back. No matter the reason and the cause of the bullying, it is still wrong to treat a fellow being like that. Many victims end their lives as a resulf of this. Even though the government is doing the best that they can to stop bullying, it's still going on.  Some people think that the victims deserve what happens to them so they make their lives even more mesirable. This is what happened in the case of Amanda Todd who lived in Canada. She was 15 years old when she commited suicide. She talked about the issue or the problem in her last video she posted before taking her own life. She told her story through flash cards. She said she went through a serious depression and she didn't even want to go to school. She was taking depression pills but it didn't really help her. she moved from schools to different schools but every school she went, people still bullied her. She drank bleach to kill herself but her parents found her early and sent her to the hospital so she didnt die. One of the boys in her school told her he liked her even though he had a girlfriend. They had sex and the boy told the whole school about it and the bullying also became intense for her that she eventually ended her life. She is not the only victim of  bullying who decided to hurt themselves or commite suicide. Demi Lovato was also a victim of bullying when she was younger. People called her " Fat" and everything and ended up cutting herself most of the time. I think government should be more strict about the issue of bullying because this issue affects innocent people who end up giving up their fights and ending up dead.

Civil Rights

When people hear about civil rights, they tend to think that it has someething to do with welfare, food stamps and many other federal accomodations for people with low incomes. It is not like that. I mean  all these are part of the civil rights but there is more to it than welfare and food stamps.Civil rights promotes and ensures that people have equal or the same opportunities to participate in healthcare services and human services program without having to face any type of discrimination. The civil rights division ( CRD) carries out the mission or the assignment of enforcing federal laws and it's regulations  that forbid discrimination which includes health care providers conscience which deals with the race, color, national origin, age, sex, religion etc. They investigate complaints made by individuals. They also conduct compliance reviews. They also provides technical assistance for the people. It helps them understand how they can comply with the law.Conduct outreach nationwide to help individuals  understand their  rights and obligations under the laws that OCR enforces.

Poverty

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=SutshaFS3lk
This is a link to a Youtube video that talks about poverty. Normally when people hear poverty, they automically assume that they are talking about people in the third world countries or the developoing countries. For example "Africa" even though Africa is just a continet and not a country.  In this video, it talks about poverty in America. The video states that over thirty-seven million people live in poverty. It also states that the number of people living in poverty has increased since the year 2000. It says that it has increase by almost 6 million since that year. It says that 13 million children live in poverty in the United States of America. Which is a lot of people! 9.7 percent of the elderly lives in poverty according to the 2008 census.5 million people lived below the poverty line in the year 2007. Many people have become poor not because they are too lazy to work or find a job. The reason is because some of the people have experienced some natural disasters such as hurricanes, tsunamis, toenadoes etc. One perfect example will be just recently when hurricane Sandy hit. Many individuals lots their homes, cars etc. They ended up living in shelters. Does that mean that they were laxy to work? Of course not! It will be difficult for these individuals that were greatly affected by Sandy to get back on their feets.Somewill even take a couple of years to recovery and then everything will be back to normal. We shouldn't just assume or imagine that people do not want to work or anything of that sort but rather we should help them in their journey to recovery!

Crime and Deviance

Mostly, deviant groups are often labelled by the media in a negative manner. Many newspapers, TV stations such as News stations normally tend to take a biased approach towards labeling deviant groups. TV plays a big role when it comes labeling certain groups. Most of the time, the media focuses on a negative aspect of behaviors among deviant groups. one example is when it comes to young people especially teenage boys wearing hoods. They are normally considered as trouble makers or engaging in criminal activities. This will be the case of Trayvon Martin. He was shot and killed by a security man because he was considered a threat to the community because he was wearing a hood. Of course when it later became a big news, we heard that he physically assaulted the security man. As the investigation went on, it was made to light that, at the time Trayvon was killed he only had a bottle of Arizona and skittles. We also found out that he had called his girlfriend saying this man was following him. To be honest, I do not know what happened next in the case but am just making a point about assuming people in hoods are trouble makers because he was wearing a hood at that time.

Job typing

Many jobs are considered masculine or feminism depending on how many males or females work on it.When a man becomes a nurse, it is considered as feminism job but that does not mean that men can't be a nurse. Rather society view that job that way. Also people consider doctor's, lawyer's and many other occupations as masculine because of how the job is. When it comes to sport, Basketball is considered masculine while volley ball is considered feminism.  I guess it depends on what a person consider male or female job when they are choosing a career. To me, I do not mind what kind of job a person do but the most important thing is that they enjoy what they are doing. Society should not choose the type of job a person can do.

Socialization

For this blog topic,I am going to talk about this TV show that was aired on ABC family known as “Kyle Xy”.  This show is about a guy who woke up in the woods with no clothes on. He had no idea who he was or what his name was. He was wandering around in the woods and ended up in the city. People kept staring at him and some people even called him freak and so on. He was later arrested by the cops because he had no clothes on. He was basically like a new born baby! He couldn't speak or do anything. When he was sent to the juvenile place, he learned how to eat things such as muffins and so on. He even learned some phrases such as “Yo! Let’s get some juice down here! “Sup? Everyone takin’ stupid pills around here?” and “Juice me!”. He even learned how to fight there too. This is related to what we studied in class on chapter four about socialization and the life cycle. In this boy’s case he learned what he knew from the people at his place which is juvenile. We can say that they were sort of like his family in some sense. Later in the episode a psychiatrist named Nicole Trager took him to her family home and he was treating him over there. When he went there he started to speak and do things that the people where doing in the family such as eating together at a dining table and many others. They named the boy Kyle since they had no file of who he was and what his name was and even his background. They treated him like family so Kyle was able to learn great things from them. They were his family. He learned his valves, norms and even their culture from them.

Education

In the United States, it is required for every individual to get at least their high school diploma. If a person does not have it, they can not find a job or do anything. Now it is even required if you want to work at McDonald. Education is very important not just in the USA but also all over the  world. Many jobs also require an individual to get the BA ( Bachelors degree) or even their master's degree. Some example of these jobs includes, Doctor's, Lawyer's etc.Our lives revolve around the knowledge that we know or the knowledge that we have. It is very likely for a person to be successful without any form of education. Education is not just going to school but it also includes what a person learns at home or any other place besides school. The type of knowledge a person get at home determines how the people will behave or do certain things. For example if you grow up in a household that does not curse, you are possibly not going to curse at people either. But if you grow up in a home that uses bad words all the time, you will definitely use the same language without noticing it. Education is not only about getting your masters or Bachelors degree but it entails more than that. It revolves around the place or the environment a person grows up. So basically it is the morals, the values, norms of people not just what your grades or what you study in school. As a sayin goes, " Charity begins at home."

Discrimination

Discrimination have a big factor in our lives. It can makes one life miserable or very happy depending on were you stand. In today's society, there is discrimination in school, at home, at work places etc. Most of the time, women are discriminated against. In work places, men and women may do the same type of work but they will each get different types of pay. The difference in the amount companies pay men and women are huge. Women can get an average pay of $25.08 per hour while men can do  the exact same job with the same qualifications for $29.66. A person might think that it does not happen in Hollywood or among celebrities. In reality, this problem is everywhere.  It Also happen among different races as well . Caucasians are more likely to receive more pay than African Americans or any other minorities such as Hispanics, Asians etc.The pay difference have decreased over the years but it still is large. At homes in many cultures, women do not have a say in what goes on around the house because it is believed that the men are the boss of the house. Women basically follow everything that they are being told by their husbands. Not long ago, i was able to watch " Wife Swap" and in that episode, the women had to listen to her husband, sons and even dog. She said that she has no say and all the men in the house are superior than she is. If the husband is not home, then the son is in charge of the house and the son is no there, the dog is. Finally if none of these people are not home, then she is in charge of the house. This might not be how many households run but there are some rules or roles that is in effect in that household.

race

In today's world, there have been a lot of issues regarding the issue of race and the  identity of a person. Many people have been made fun of because of the race they are. Many races also view themselves as superior than others. In industries or in working places, it is guaranteed that certain races will succeed in life. For example the White people are more likely to succeed than the Black people. It is not just in the industries but is everywhere that we go. It is in schools and even in hollywood. The difference that race makes in an individuals pay check is huge. Sometimes we have this idea that racism is long gone but what we do not realize is that, it is not as visibnle as it used to be back then. For example white people and black people drinking from different types of fountains or going to different school. It is not like that now but many white communities have better school systems than black communities. There are lots of money invested in the white community schools than the blacks. This makes it more evident that race still is a factor in life that can never be looked upon. It contributes to our everyday activities.
